Introduction
Welcome to the Frankish Empire. Encompassing almost every square inch of Western Corvus, it is the largest nation the world has ever seen. And it is crumbling.
Financial ruin struck the Empire after incessant warring with Ochreland in the north and numerous failed campaigns into the east. The treasury buckled under the strains of arming, feeding, and training their massive armies. A poor harvest season meant that so much was drawn for the wars that a general famine struck the country, hitting the port cities hardest. The Emperor's sudden death struck the hammer on the metaphorical coffin of the Empire's demise. Five sons were left, and the Emperor had not bequeathed the land to any child in particular. He was a commoner by birth, having seized his crown through conquest. The business of succession never came across the mind of the late Emperor.
Argencourt, a bustling, vibrant port on the shores of the Central Seas, was not exempt from the famines that struck all of Frankia during the year 1862. Hundreds died in the first month, the number of dead growing almost exponentially as time went on. In February, the match was struck. At a protest, a woman was reportedly struck down by a soldier. A riot ensued, becoming the first of many "Bread Riots" in the Frankish cities, as the commoners demanded the local governments do more to fix the crisis.
Fiery critiques of the government came through the press, through pamphlets and the newspapers, pointing out the lavish, opulent lifestyles of the nobility in contrast to the almost desperately impoverished state of the citizens. The urban centers, especially the eastern ports, where cultures mixed, became hotbeds for radical thought and dissent. The Empire sat on a bed of coals, which were starting to heat up.
Our story begins in Argencourt, on June 2nd, 1862, the day before the celebration of Frankish unification. We will follow the events surrounding an infamous incident in Frankish history, one of the first flares of major revolutionary activity in the Empire.
THE OOC
Welcome to SCN's first historical roleplay! In these roleplays you will be playing as characters in pivotal moments in history. This particular roleplay is a character roleplay, meaning that you will have the opportunity to create a character in the time period to take part in the events. Roleplays like these, however, require a special application process and certain special rules.
In this roleplay, you will be thrust into one of the infamous early revolutionary bomb plots, where Frankish dissidents attempted to spark armed revolts by setting off explosions and securing government armories. You may play as a figure on any side of the plot, from a powerful nobleman to an angry revolutionary firebrand. Depending on the outcome of the roleplay, future roleplays using the same characters may follow as an extension of the story.
Factions
(If you feel like another group should be added, just ask!):
Frankish Empire
Royal Frankish Gendarmerie - The Police - Militarized Police Force of the Frankish Empire. The institution is brutal, corrupt, and has almost free reign over the citizenry. Recent domestic strife has prompted local authorities to call in the Gendarmerie to replace local police forces to keep order.
The Ancien Regime - The Frankish Nobility - Unbelievably rich, selectively bred dynastic sons and daughters of the old Frankish states, kept tamed by holding low level administrative positions in the Empire. Their riches, however, place them in undisputed control of Frankish domestic politics.
Frankish Citizens
Frankish Revolutionaries
The Montagnards - The Radicals - Left leaning revolutionaries demanding quick and immediate change, advocating for increased civil rights and liberties and the end to the reign of the monarchs. Large support among the intellectuals, abroad, and among the urban majority. Spreads revolutionary propaganda through pamphlets and newspapers, the most outwardly revolutionary group.
Socialiste Franciose - The Socialists - Far left, Marxist socialist party advocating for increased worker rights. Minority section of the party has begun to favor a violent overthrow of state rather than a political overthrow. The Socialists are the only revolutionary group with political representation, but is small, and much of the party still advocates for a peaceful transition to an idealized socialist state.
Epee du Roi - The Monarchists - Far right, xenophobic, monarchist revolutionaries advocating for the return of the local "du Crecy" dynasty as the head of the state of East Frankia, with a large representation in the rural lower class and the police.
